Language Information
Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia and is spoken by approximately 250 million people. Indonesian is a standardized form of Malay.
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, and over 95% of the nation's population speak the language fluently. A multitude of regional languages are also spoken, but Indonesian is the language of official communications and the media. Outside of Indonesia, Indonesian is also spoken in East Timor, Malaysia, and several other regions primarily in Southeast Asia.
Introductory and intermediate levels of Indonesian are currently offered during the academic year at IU by the Department of Southeast Asian & ASEAN Studies.
