Languages in Afghanistan
Language Information
Dari is a language spoken by approximately 12.5 million people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is the language of governance and education in Afghanistan. It is mutually intelligible with the Persian (Farsi) spoken in Iran, and is sometimes called Afghan Persian. The name "Dari" dates from at least the 10th century, when it was mentioned by writers in Arabic and Persian.
While Dari is not offered at Indiana University, Persian is available at the introductory through advanced levels by the Department of Central Eurasian Studies.
Persian is also offered during the summer through the Language Workshop.
More information about Dari, as well as additional language resources, as available through the Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region.
