Fall Orientation is designed specifically for new FLTAs, AIs, and instructors, though all language instructors are welcome to attend our orientation events. Whether participants attend the CLE/CeLT orientation in full or only partially, it is required that all participants register for it. We will add the registrant names to the Canvas course and send invitations to join the course.

In this session, you will have a unique and fun opportunity to meet with the College’s Executive Associate Dean, Dr. Jane McLeod. She joined the IU Bloomington faculty in 1998, became the associate executive dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 2020.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Jane McLeod served three years as chair of Sociology, four years as associate dean for Social and Historical Sciences and Graduate Education in the College, and one year as associate vice provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs. This hands-on workshop provides an overview of the basic features and tools of the Canvas learning management system, which is used in all courses at IU. Specifically, you will learn to set up a new course manually, customize course navigation, create critical components such as syllabus, content pages, assignments, quizzes, rubrics, modules, course email, and discussion forums.

This hands-on workshop provides an overview of the basic features Zoom. This session will simulate teaching with Zoom—so you can both practice teaching with Zoom as well as having student experience. We will cover: scheduling zoom meetings, sharing meeting information, setting up the meeting for automatic recording, delivering a lesson with the room, screen sharing, creating breakout rooms for conversation, and locating and sharing recorded meetings.

Interactive Language Games

These sessions will simulate and involve interactive language learning games. Games provide a useful and meaningful context for language use; motivate students to interact and communicate. According to research, games can both challenge and reduce anxiety; provide practice in all four skills, and help to break tension in the classroom.

The Health Center is committed to continuing to support your mental health and well-being as you pursue your academic goals remotely as part of IU’s response to coronavirus (COVID-19). We understand that the rapidly changing events around the coronavirus may create a wide range of emotional responses and increased distress. We want to assure you that this range of responses is normal. 

Our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Health & Wellness departments support a holistic model that acknowledges multiple domains that contribute to overall mental health, persistence, and resilience. To that end, we would like to offer a range of virtual resources to aid you in maintaining or creating new ways of navigating and coping with life stressors.

In this session, you will learn about Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) services, adjusting to graduate school, signs of distress, and how Associate Instructors should refer students to CAPS. We offer free online workshops on stress, anxiety, mindfulness, and other topics. Students learn strategies they can use immediately to improve symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety, and to better manage problems that affect their academic success. 

Participants will be required to participate in the live workshop. Attendance/engagement data will be collected via a combination of Kaltura/Zoom login data.

Campus Climate Workshop (Mandatory)

Presenter: The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL)

The annual Classroom Climate Workshop (CCW) each satisfies the requirements established by the Bloomington Faculty Council that all new associate instructors receive training in an enhanced understanding of cultural diversity. In this event, you will learn about Federal laws and IU policies regarding classroom inclusion and equity; and address inclusive and equitable teaching practices through several concurrent workshop options.

Online recordings will address a variety of topics that students may encounter in their teaching assignments, including addressing microaggressions, managing class discussions about race, building inclusive and equitable learning environments, and more. For participation credit, you must view each recording in its entirety and respond to the reflection activity. You will need to log into https://kaltura.iu.edu first in order to view any of the videos below. You can access them individually or see the whole catalog in the CCW Channel

Live sessions will take place the week of August 17-21, 2020, and there will be a two-week window of availability (August 17-28) for viewing the recordings.

Participants will be required to view the general recordings and participate in one live workshop. Attendance/engagement data will be collected via a combination of Kaltura/Zoom login data and a series of short application activities completed after each session. This information will be shared with VPFAA and the appropriate administrator in each school in early September.

College academic policies and academic integrity procedures

This training session is for Associate Instructors covering campus and College academic policies as well as academic integrity procedures. virtual session via Zoom that will include information on specific policies that apply and actions that AIs should take when faced with common classroom situations.

In addition, we will review academic integrity procedures that all instructors at IU are required to follow. The session includes extra time so that we can address specific questions from the audience. The session will be recorded for viewing after the presentation.

Associate Instructor Orientation

This year's Associate Instructor Orientation (AIO) will be held virtually in light of safety concerns. AIO will be offered as a series of webinars that will be span two weeks: August 17th - 28th. To be sent the Zoom URL for the webinar, you will have to register for the event using the webinar links below.
