Language Information
Swahili, or Kiswahili, is the language of over 150 million people in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Mozambique, as well as in parts of Somalia, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Comoro Islands. Swahili is the lingua franca of many of these countries and is the official national language of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Kiswahili is also used as one of the working languages of the African Union.
At Indiana University, Swahili is offered by the African Studies Program at the beginning through advanced levels. During the summer, intensive online Swahili is available through the Language Workshop.
