Pawnee is mainly and traditionally spoken by Pawnee Native Americans in the midwestern United States (Oklahoma and Nebraska). Pawnee is in the Caddoan language family. The Pawnee language is considered critically endangered, with the fewer than 10 native speakers found in a 2007 survey.
At Indiana University, the Institute for Indigenous Knowledgehas worked or over a decade to develop language curricula and other materials for indigenous languages. n 1997, the Pawnee Language Program was established to create language instruction materials to insure the survival of the Pawnee language - materials that provide instruction for future generations of Pawnee children and adults who are interested in their cultural heritage and are committed to maintaining their language. The program is a cooperative effort between the Pawnee Nation (Pawnee, Oklahoma) and Indiana University.
