Language Information
Modern Hebrew is the official language of Israel. This revitalized language was revived nearly 1500 years after Biblical Hebrew fell out of mainstream use, in the mid-19th century.
Modern Hebrew is spoken by approximately 10 million people, primarily in Israel. About 6 million are native speakers, and there are several million who speak Hebrew as a second language both in Israel and throughout the world.
At Indiana University, a three-year sequence of Modern Hebrew courses is offerred by the Borns Jewish Studies Program. A Hebrew Minor is also available, as are numerous related cultural and religion courses.
