Language and Areas Studies Courses Available through Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) CourseShare
The Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) CourseShare program allows degree-seeking students of member universities to take less commonly taught language courses offered at other Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions remotely (synchronously), while paying their standard home university's tuition rate.
If you are a degree-seeking IU student and need to learn a language not offered at IU, please consult with your advisor about BTAA possibilities. Your advisor can collaborate with the language departments and the IU CourseShare Coordinator to assess a potential partnering with another Big Ten institute to receive the course.
If you are an IU instructor who is teaching a less commonly taught language and would like to offer the course to other Big Ten institution students, please contact IU's CourseShare Coordinator.

Information for non-IU BTAA students (receiving a course from IU)
As a BTAA CourseShare student, you will be receiving credit from your home institution but we will be an official guest student at IU for the semester. Not only will you be a part of IU’s outstanding language community, but you will also have access to IU’s many resources.
The Center for Language Technology at IU is the primary contact for all things BTAA. CeLT coordinates that CourseShare program to/from IU and provides technological assistance to language instructors.
To register for a CourseShare couse, you will work with your home university (starting with your advisor or language program). The BTAA coordinator and registrar at your institution will share your information with IU’s coordinator and registrar, who will enroll you as a guest student. Once the enrollment process is complete, you will receive an email from the IU CourseShare Coordinator (coshare@iu.edu) containing information about creating your IU email and computing account. Students must follow the instructions in this email in order to gain access to course content and IU resources.
Frequently Asked Questions about BTAA CourseShare
CourseShare classes have local IU students who attend in-person and distance BTAA students who attend synchronously online via Zoom.Typically, BTAA students can join the Zoom class from any convenient and quiet location (like a dorm room). In some special cases (when several BTAA students from the same institution are taking the same course), the students’ home university might reserve a classroom for these students to join the class together.
A laptop or desktop computer with a high-quality webcam and an audio headset should be all that is necessary. A strong internet connection is required.
IU uses Canvas as the platform for course materials, assignments, assessments, etc. Once the BTAA CourseShare registration process is complete, you will receive an email from the IU CourseShare Coordinator with information about creating you IU computing account to access Canvas and IU email.
Your syllabus will provide information about necessary texts and other materials you will need to purchase. If ordering online from the IU Bookstore, you can have your materials shipped to your home.
Please contact University IT Services(UITS) for issues regarding computing accounts, accessing any IU tools, and other computing/technology questions.
If your problems are not solved by UITS, please contact the IU CourseShare Coordinator for further assistance.
IU's official calendar can be found at this link. Fall classes generally run late August through late December, and spring classes generally run early-to-mid January through early May.
Due to academic calendar differences between various BTAA institutions, this situation is not uncommon. If you have not yet been in touch with your instructor, please contact the IU CourseShare Coordinator to help you get connected.
Generally instructorsmay share the course’s Zoom link and other information with you once you have committed to the course, even if it takes some time for the official registration to be finalized at both institutions. Additionally, instructors may recommend or require additional tutoring/office hours in order to catch up if you have missed the beginning of the semester.

Yes, it is possible to register as a non-degree seeking student at IU for the purpose of taking a language course in the same format (synchronous Zoom) as the BTAA CourseShare program. The IU Department of Central Eurasian Studies has an excellent summary of the process on their webpage here, but other languages will also qualify. Please reach out to the IU CourseShare Coordinator for more information.
