Language Information
The Yakut language, also known as Yakutian or Sakha, is a Turkic language spoken primarily by the Yakut people in the Sakha Republic. The Sakha Republic, also called Yakutia, is a large region of Russia in the northeast of the country. Yakut is spoken by about 450,000 people.
Although Yakut is a Turkic language, is diverged long ago from other Turkic languages. Russian and Mongolian loan words are also common. Yakut is written with the Cyrillic alphabet with five additional characters, although other scripts have been used previously.
Yakut is not currently offered at Indiana University.
