Language Information
Votyak, also called Udmurt, is part of the Permic branch of the Uralic language family. Votyak is the language of the Udmurt people who mainly live in Udmurtia (or the Udmurt Republic), in western Russia. "Udmurt" is the term generally used by the Udmurt people to describe their language, while "Votyak" (the Russian term for the language) is generally used by outsiders.
Votyak is written with a modified Cyrillic alphabet, which adds five unique characters. Currently, the language has around 270,000 native speakers.
Votyak is not currently taught at Indiana University.
