Language Information
Sanskrit is the classical language of ancient India and is considered the language of learning in much of South Asia. Many sacred works of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism are recorded in Sanskrit, along with multitudes of renowned works in literature, medicine, and philosophy. Knowledge of Sanskrit is regarded as essential to anyone interested in a serious engagement with the long and rich intellectual, cultural, religious and linguistic histories of South Asia.
At Indiana University, the Dhar India Studies Program offers elementary through advanced Sanskrit courses each year.
