Portuguese is a Romance language native to Portugal as well as the official language of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union. Portuguese is the world's fifth-most spoken native language, with over 250 million speakers.
At Indiana University, the Portuguese program housed within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is one of the oldest in the nation. Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered, including majors and minors. Our upper-division and graduate curriculum focuses on Brazilian, Portuguese and Lusophone African literatures and cultures. Courses are regularly taught on Brazilian cinema as well as on a range of special topics. Study abroad opportunities are available and encouraged.
