Language Information
Hindi is the fourth most-spoken language in the world, with over 600 million speakers. Hindi is primarily spoken in India (particularly in the north), where it is an official language. Significant communities of Hindi speakers are also found in Nepal, Mauritius, the U.S., and Fiji.
At Indiana University, the Dhar India Studies Program offers 3 years of Hindi language instruction. A minor in Hindi language is available, as well as additional courses in culture, art, religion, and history. The Dhar India Studies Program conducts a Hindi proficiency test every semester for students who wish to test out of their foreign language requirement on the Bloomington campus and at IU's other campuses.
