Language Information
Greek is spoken by about 14 million people mainly in Greece and Cyprus, where it is an official language. Greek is also recognized as a minority language in parts of Italy, and in Albania, Armenia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine. The language belongs to its own Hellenic branch of the Indo-European language family.
The Greek language has been of significant influence since antiquity, being widely spoken throughout the Mediterranean and by numerous empires. Modern Greek is considered to have arisen after the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453.
At Indiana University, undergraduate majors and graduate studies in Classical Greek and interdisciplinary studies in Modern Greek are offered.
