Language Information
With nearly 1.5 billion speakers, English is the most spoken language globally. English is an official language of nearly 60 countries, and is the de facto language of numerous others (including the U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand).
At Indiana University, the Department of English offers majors, minors, and a wide variety of courses to help explore and expand the power of the English language. Coursework falls into three primary areas of study: literature and language; creative writing; and rhetoric, writing, and communication.
For international students, Indiana University's Department of Second Language Studies offers two options for supporting English learning:
- Intensive English Program (IEP)
- The IEP serves learners of English by offering courses designed to support the development of English language skills for academic studies in North American universities.
- English Language Improvement Program (ELIP).
- The ELIP provides courses for admitted IU students to further improve their academic English language skills.
The Department of Second Language Studies also offers certificates and graduate degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
