The Creole Institute at IU was founded in 1968 by Dr. Albert Valdman to serve as a central resource for Creole language teaching and learning materials in the US. During the Institute’s more than 50 years of existence, it produced and distributed a wealth of publications and recordings, many of which remain highly utilized today. More information about the history and impact of the Institute is provided by the Department of French and Italian (FRIT), at this link. As of May 2019, the Creole Institute has closed and its valuable holdings have been entrusted to related units at Indiana University.
