Language Information
Amharic is one of the five official languages of Ethiopia used in government, business, government schools, most newspapers, and by educated people. It is the first language of Amhara people that are indigenous to Ethiopia. According to the data of 2018, there are more than 32 million native speakers and 25 million people (data of 2019) use it as a second language.
The Amharic Basic Course presents lessons in dialogues, drills, exercises, and narratives. It includes samples of speech, explanations of basic language structures, and a variety of practical exercises.
Amharic is not currently taught on the IU campus, but we do have access to The Basic Amharic. Additional resources can be found from the Foreign Service Institute.
