Best Practices in Foreign Language Teaching

This workshop provides an overview on best practices in foreign language instruction, including use of authentic materials, promoting a student-centered classroom, and ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Community.

This session will provide background for lesson planning and sample lesson plans focusing on the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational.

Experiencing a New Language

This session showcases a sample first-day foreign language lesson. Participants will be exposed to best teaching practices and strategies for using the target language from the first day of class. A guided discussion and analysis will follow. 

Assignments 

Assignment 1 (Due Tuesday August 16 morning): Study the materials provided to you on Teaching Grammar in Context.  

  • The assignment will be discussed on Tuesday 

 

Assignment 2: (Due Wednesday August 17): Develop a lesson plan focusing on one or two modes of communication to be presented on Wednesday.

The training includes two sections: 

  • Summarize and discuss Assignment 1.  
  • Teaching demo on Interpersonal Mode based on Best Practices in language instruction. Participants who do not speak the demo language will take the role of students

This training session focuses on University and College policies that apply to classroom teaching, procedures for handling academic integrity violations, and various classroom situations. There will also be time for Q&A.

This is a meeting between FLTAs and FLTA supervisors (and/or lecturers the FLTAs will be working with). In addition, topics will include other necessary things, including immunizations, FERPA and sexual misconduct tutorials, selecting and registering for courses, course enrollment request form (for NELC-N 696), etc.

Instructors will demonstrate lessons on Best Practices in language instruction. Lessons in two different languages will be modelled in the demos. Participants who do not speak the relevant demo language will take the role of students.

Each participant will present a lesson plan that clearly reflects best FL instruction practices and (a minimum) of one mode of communication, followed by discussion and feedback from instructors.

Introduction to Canvas for Language Instructors  

Presenter: Xiaojing Kou, Center for Language Technology (CeLT) 

Please arrive on time since this workshop is hands-on and missing steps may make it difficult to follow.  

This hands-on workshop provides an overview of the basic features and tools of the Canvas learning management system, which is used in all courses at IU. Specifically, you will learn to set up a new course manually, customize course navigation, create critical components such as syllabus, content pages, assignments, quizzes, modules, course email, and discussion forums.

This session showcases the many multimedia creation facilities, equipment, and software available to language instructors at IU. Audio and video recording, editing, and sharing will be discussed, as well as several additional resources for enriching your teaching materials through images and graphics.

The Welcome Lunch is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and is open to all new language teaching AIs, FLTAs, and instructors. Language program coordinators and some returning language AIs and instructors from various language departments will also join us to welcome new community members. We design this activity as a way for all language programs to mingle.  

The lunch will start from the welcome speech by Executive Associate Dean Jane McLeod at BH 203 and food will be served in the hallway across the elevator on the second floor.  

If you also plan to attend the CeLT Open House (Scavenger Hunt), please get the Mission Book when you get your lunch box.

New Language Instructor Studio Hours 

New language instructors and FLTAs are welcome to use BH 115 to work independently on their lesson plan, course materials, etc., to get ready for Monday. No instruction will be given. However, you have access to support from CeLT staff who have expertise in technology integration in language instruction, audio and video, web development, etc.   

There are a maximum of 28 stations in this room. No registration is needed. The one who come first will be accommodated.

  • It is required that instructors have a proper IU account in order to participate in the workshop. If you do not have one yet, please contact UITS support.

The CITL orientation is designed for all new associate instructors (vs. CeLT Orientation for only FLTAs and Language associate instructors). If there is any workshop you want to attend but has time conflict with the CeLT/CLE Orientation, please discuss with your department language coordinator to decide. It is strongly recommended that you participate in all of the CeLT/CLE orientation since each day is designed based on teaching from previous days.
