Racial Expectations in the Classroom and Cruelty of "Caring"

Thursday, March 05, 2020

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Global and International Studies Building Room # 3067
355 N Jordan Ave.
Bloomington, Indiana 47405

Workshop Description

Undoubtedly, the teaching profession is full of some of the most caring people in the world. But when can caring lead to a stifling or even crushing environment for a student and ultimately cause their failure? This workshop will be conducted as a directed discussion, by way of which we will work to understand how teachers’ innocent desire to provide extra support for certain groups of students can cause anxiety for these very students and destroy their motivation in the subject—and their studies in general.

About the presenter

Paul Coats has been a Core Lecturer and Supervisor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese since 2015. Before arriving in Bloomington, he was trained in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, TESOL, and Literature, although his primary focus consisted of analyzing and augmenting the development of sound perception and production in foreign language learners, particularly among bilinguals learning a third language. At IU, he has applied his knowledge in these areas to assist in the development of the Basic Language Program, as well as taught for the IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages in Mexico and Spain. In order to further increase participation in Spanish language learning in our state and the surrounding community, he regularly volunteers as a director/actor for Grupo de Teatro VIDA and as an organizer for the annual Spanish & Portuguese Song Festival and is the Vice President for the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
