IU Language Departments and Centers

IU Language Departments, Programs, Centers and Institutes

In terms of language learning and teaching, as well as the wider scope of studies in culture, literature, art, music, history, society, and politics, Indiana University has a lot to offer to IU students and the broader national audience. In addition to the regular academic departments, programs, and centers that offer language programs or individual language courses, IU also has three types of U.S. Department of Education Title VI programs:

  • National Resource Center (NRC),
  • Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, and
  • Language Resource Centers (LRC),

and three Language Flagship Programs funded by U.S. Department of Defense.

With this page, we aim to provide comprehensive information that we hope will benefit:

  • IU students so that they can discover relevant information around languages at IU for selecting courses and building their learning path, as well as IU faculty and academic advisors who may help students with these tasks.
  • IU offices who need relevant information for their promotion of IU programs, grant applications, etc.
  • External users such as those who have an interest in applying for IU and scholars who need to locate information, resources and experts on particular topics.

* Unit abbreviations are based on IU course catalogue notation.

* When not specified, all units are under the College of Arts and Sciences (including the Hamilton Lugar School).
