What is HEIC/HEIF?
Many iphone users might be aware that their devices have adapted to a new format for images / videos, HEIF(.HEIC as extensions for image files).
HEIF stands for "High Efficiency Image File Format". Though it was first introduced and defined in 2001, it came into daily use as late as 2017 when Apple decided to set its default image format as "HEIC" since iOS 11 and they would like it to replace "jpg" gradually.
In practice, as it claimed by Apple Inc., the HEIF standard would use more advanced compression methods and standards to allow the images being created in smaller sizes but still retain the equivolent level of quality as jpg 2000 standard.
Now, the support of HEIC format is growing. Mainstream operating systems and photo editing software has accepted it. But we are still not so sure about its future.
